This class is designed to provide individualized instruction to al skill levels which advances drawing and/or painting proficiency. This studio style class reviews form, composition and color study throughout the creative process. Gary  teaches drawing basics (line, form, shading, perspective and composition) in a variety of mediums to enhance each artist’s skill. The artist and creator of “The Art of a Cowboy” documentary series, Steve Boaldin, teaches the techniques he has mastered throughout his career. Learn the tricks and tools he uses to achieve realistic art with oil paints, mixed media, and pencils. Beginning to advanced students are welcome to create alongside this well-known Oklahoma artist. Designed with a studio feel, this class is intended for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. Brush techniques, color combinations and a variety of mediums are offered. Emphasis is place on subject, preparation, and transference techniques to watercolor paper. Additionally, still life, landscape and portraiture skills are presented to interested students Gary provides encourage, individualized instruction which advances each student’s artistic level. All skill levels are invited to join this class. Instruction is tailored to the individual. Emphasis is placed on choice of materials, depiction of light and shadow, painting techniques, basic color mixing and composition. The course provides students with a foundation for creative expression in oil painting. Come get away from the stress of the day and enjoy a relaxing, no pressure atmosphere to practice and learn.  Instructor: Jon Martindale

Oil Painting supply list

  • Basic starter set of oil paints
  • Odorless Turpentine/turpenoid or odorless mineral spirits (AKA paint thinner)
  • Small container of Linseed Oil
  • Canvas, canvas board, wood panel, or clay board (pre-gessoed is best (any size))
  • A few brushes (they come in variety packs and are specifically for Oil or Oil and Acrylic)
  • A few mixing pallet knives (sometimes they come with the paint set)
  • An oil pallet (can be store bought or I recommend a $1 store picture frame with glass)
  • 1-2 air tight jars (either store bought or I recommend old food jars like baby food/salsa/jam)
  • Encouraged for students to bring a photo of something they would like to try painting

Painting with acrylics is rewarding, versatile and fun.  Native Oklahoma artist Thomas Stotts teaches his personal techniques used to create the unique landscapes and structures in his paintings. Through instructor demonstration, lecture, and individual practice, students learn the characteristics of acrylics, composition, perspective, distance, depth, light, shadows and color. Learn to manipulate the paint brush in varied ways to gain new painting effects and  work with  “washes” to create a “dreamy, atmospheric” look that is very popular.   • Packaged set of basic colors of dry/chalk pastels.
  • Small bottle of fixative spray
  • Pastel paper
    ***Something with texture. Different brands have different kinds and different tones.  Try some out and see which you prefer. some are sold in books
  • Knead-able eraser

Optional:

  • Disposable gloves to keep hands clean.
