Edmond Youth Chorus

The Edmond Youth Chorus is an honor chorus for boys & girls who will be in the 4th to 7th grades in the fall.  The chorus will begin its 24th year in August.  Members of the Edmond Youth chorus rehearse on Mondays from 4:30 - 6:00 pm at the new FAI building at 27 E. Edwards.  The first rehearsal will be August 25th.

Chorus members receive vocal instruction and learn a wide range of selected music such as contemporary, sacred, folk, patriotic, seasonal, and classical. Choreography is developed for some songs and mallet and percussion instruments are used. New ideas and music are presented each year. Many children audition and remain in the chorus for four years.

Leah McDonald, music teacher at Cross Timbers elementary and former Edmond Teacher of the Year, will serve again as the Director of the Edmond Youth Chorus which is sponsored by the Fine Arts Institute.

Leah is passionate when it comes to music and children and we are thrilled she will share her talent with us," states Mitzi Hancuff, Executive Director of the FAI.

"I do my best to fill students and chorus members with a life long love of music. Music and art enhance self-esteem, self-awareness and foster understanding between cultures," says Leah McDonald.

Auditions are held in August. At the auditions children will be asked to sing a familiar tune and will be given music patterns to sing. Four children may sing together and individually during the five-minute audition.

The Chorus year is from August 25 through April 26. The chorus performs at community functions from October through April and has a Spring Concert in April. The ideal size for the chorus is 45 voices.

The Edmond Youth Chorus is one of the many cultural projects sponsored by the Fine Arts Institute of Edmond. Now in its 24th year, the Institute is a charitable organization offering educational opportunities for children and adults in the visual and performing arts.

Appointments for a "friendly" chorus audition must be scheduled by calling the Fine Arts Institute at 340-4481. Genevieve McClain is the FAI chorus coordinator.
